Rattlesnake Master

Eryngium yuccifolium

Rattlesnake Master's blue-green foliage and spiky heads create an architectural feature in the border.  The color is particularly attractive in combination with pinks and purples, like those of coneflowers.  The stems are beautiful in fresh and dried arrangements. Rattlesnake Master is a Midwest native plant which occurs in rocky woods, prairies and glades. It was a common plant of the vast, tallgrass prairie. Rattlesnake Master has bold, basal rosettes of parallel-veined, bristly-edged, sword-shaped leaves resembling those of yucca. Tall stalks rise above foliage with tiny, stemless, greenish-white flowers tightly packed into globular, 1" diameter heads resembling thistles.
